Charity copywriting

Getting someone to part with their own money, time or energy for a good cause is one of the hardest things any piece of writing has to do. Charity copy that achieves it takes genuine empathy, careful judgement and the ability to tell a real human story without exploiting it. That’s exactly what I do as a charity copywriter.

Telling your story with impact and empathy

Charity communications ask a lot of people. Sometimes you’re asking for money. Sometimes you’re asking for time, energy or a willingness to campaign for a cause. Whatever you’re asking, the copy has to make someone feel that your cause matters enough to act on it.

I write with empathy and care, whether I’m telling a beneficiary’s story, making the case for a fundraising campaign or encouraging supporters to get involved in another way.

Charity copy that moves people to act

I can help with:

  • fundraising appeals and campaign copy
  • website content
  • case studies and beneficiary stories
  • supporter emails
  • impact reports and publications
  • leaflets, brochures and other marketing materials
  • social media content where it forms part of a wider campaign.

Whatever the project, I’ll help you find the right words to draw readers in, make your cause feel real and give them a reason to act, whether that’s by donating, fundraising or spreading the word.

Emails that inspire action

Every supporter email is fighting for space in your reader’s inbox. That’s why each subject line, hook and message must grab your readers’ attention and give them reasons to care.

As a dedicated charity copywriter, I write supporter emails that are clear, personal and purposeful – whether you’re asking for donations, promoting an event, sharing an impact story or encouraging people to get involved.

And I’ll keep a close eye on your open and click-through rates so we can refine what’s working and improve what isn’t.

Here’s a sample piece written for a national charity, highlighting the challenges faced by carers in the UK. The charity wanted new content that was direct and succinct, yet empathetic.

Original content from the client

Relationships are rarely fixed throughout life, they grow and change with life stages and events, and people take the rough with the smooth most of the time. However, when a partner or family member becomes less able – and that may be for a variety of reasons although is usually associated with ill health – it may not be easy to acknowledge that a different kind of relationship will emerge.

Many people are carers without realising; providing support to a relative, partner or friend unpaid and on top of work and family commitments. With your support we aim to assist as many individuals as we can.

The new content

Relationships rarely stay the same – they grow and change throughout our lives. But when a partner or family member becomes less able, often for health reasons, it can profoundly affect that bond.

Many people become carers without even realising it – offering unpaid support to a relative, partner or friend on top of their work and family commitments. With your support, we’re determined to help as many carers as we can.

Why work with me as your charity copywriter?

Charity communications need the right balance of clarity, empathy and purpose. I’ll help you find that balance, whether you’re speaking to supporters, beneficiaries, volunteers or the wider public.

Over the years, I’ve written for charities and not-for-profits including Help for Heroes, Hope and Homes for Children and Salisbury Hospice Charity. That experience means I understand the care needed when communicating sensitive subjects, telling real stories and asking people to take action.

You’ll get copy that speaks honestly to the people you want to reach, explains why your cause matters, and gives them a reason to act.

A few words from my lovely clients…

I'm proud to work as a charity copywriter for many great causes

Several sample images from the Salisbury Hospice Charity website

Salisbury Hospice Charity

Salisbury Hospice Charity needed new website content that would speak to two very different audiences at once: donors who needed to feel the importance of the hospice’s work and patients and families facing some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

I wrote content that reflected the care and sensitivity the subject demanded, connecting with both audiences without losing sight of either.

The Charity for Civil Servants

This charity helps civil servants navigate some of life’s tougher challenges, from mental health to money management.

I’ve written content across a wide range of campaigns, including a lottery relaunch and a festive fundraising campaign. For one particularly memorable project, we created a playful comic series about skills-sharing, bringing a light touch to a subject that could easily have felt dull and mundane.

The Driver Youth Trust website

Driver Youth Trust

For this national charity, I developed a social media strategy and email sequences designed to encourage teachers to engage with online SEND training, making the case for professional development in a way that felt relevant and accessible rather than prescriptive.

The Hope and Homes for Children website

Hope and Homes for Children

This Salisbury-based charity transforms the lives of children in some of the poorest parts of Europe and Africa. I brought their stories to life with several articles for the charity’s magazine.

One article, profiling a fundraising supporter who had completed a remarkable expedition, received external commendation after publication.
